Illumian 1.0

Illumian is no longer supported as it seems a dead project.

Illumian is a free distribution initiated by Nexenta. It is the base of NexentaStor 4.0
It shares the Illumos kernel and the apps with OpenIndiana but uses Debian-like repackaging
(installs apps via apt-get..)

Illumian will not the main but a supported napp-it platform and is available from

Insights and open questions (If you have an answer, send an email to )

Installation: per ISO but keyboard settings are not saved, use english

Update repository
browse at
- apt-get update
- apt-get upgrade

apt-clone upgrade not working, asumes syspool, now name is rpool like usual on Solaris
use beadm to create a system snap

napp-it installation works after (included in current wget installer, similar to Solaris 11)
ln -s /usr/lib/ /usr/lib/
ln -s /usr/lib/ /usr/lib/

Not working:
Installation of bonnie++
apt-get install benchmark-bonnieplus

bonnie++ gives a: bonnie++: fatal: open failed: No such file or directory

Compiling smartmontools requires gcc-dev
on OpenIndiana its a: pkg install gcc-dev
on Illumian?

In the repo you find developer-gcc*
apt-get install developer-gcc++ installs them all but they are not working

workaround for bonnie and smartmontools: installer is using binaries from OI

vmware tools - how to install?

about XAMPP
You can install xampp but Apache won't start with error:
httpd: Syntax error on line 507 of /opt/xampp/etc/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /opt/xampp/etc/extra/httpd-xampp.conf: Cannot load /opt/xampp/modules/ into server: httpd: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/lib/ symbol NSS_SetDomesticPolicy: referenced symbol not found

Workaround: comment line 1 in /opt/xampp/etc/httpd.conf
(start without php)

about manual Network-config:
network config is similar to Openindiana with the difference that Illumian needs a file like (similar to ncp)
/etc/hostname.e1000g0 or /etc/dhcp.e1000g0 for persistant setting (i would prefer same behaviour like OI and Solaris)

Comstar/ iSCSI Installation

apt-get install storage-stmf network-iscsi-target
apt-get install network-iscsi-ise

svcadm enable -s stmf
svcadm enable -s iscsi/target

netatalk 3.0.1 Setup after you have installed napp-it via
wget -O - !  | perl

about Console :
Root console is used for realtime loggings and system error messages (mostly realtime monitor).
If you need to work at console as root: login as regular user and enter su to get superuser permissions
Use root as role not as user beside file access via WinSCP  (You may connect via putty as root and duplicate session)
This may change with napp-it 1.0
